About the athlete

Sean Gaffney

British Invictus Games Competitor

Sean has been taking part in different sporting activities for as long as he can remember, starting with rugby and football at school, and sailing, kayaking and orienteering as a cadet. Sean was involved in a freak accident in 1999 while preparing for the Royal Tournament, he had to undergo 25 surgeries and the amputation of his left leg. Since then, Sean has also battled cancer twice but has overcome all these obstacles with grit and resilience. A 30-year career in the Royal Navy gave Sean the opportunity to take part in many sports. He represented the Fleet Air Arm at the Royal Tournament as a command field gunner in the world's toughest team sport – the annual Command Field Gun Competition. He also represented the Royal Navy as a Powerlifter and Indoor Rower. Sport has been a powerful force in his life, and he will continue to train and compete for as long as he can.
